non-nsa sponsored volunteer opportunities
We understand that during some of us are able to and wish to serve the community in other ways. We want to recognize volunteers for their efforts, in services that are not related to other on-campus organizations, by allowing them to fulfill their 5 point active membership requirement through outside opportunities. Examples of such activities are donating blood and creating care packages for first responders. We also have other opportunities listed below. Please keep in mind that these are all suggestive and merely for inspiration! Volunteers are not obligated to adhere to what is listed.
If you have more volunteering opportunities, also please contact our Community Service Team at [email protected] with details about the organization--such as what they do, how to become a volunteer, and volunteer duties.
Please email in a completed copy of the form below!
Please note: these outside opportunities are not sponsored by NSA nor will we be going as an organization. NSA is not responsible for any injuries or losses sustained at/to/from the event. These are simply outside opportunities that you can choose to engage in for points!
volunteer crisis counselor with crisis line
About
We've exchanged over 28 million messages with people in crisis in our 3.5 years of existence. Crisis Text Line is powered by trained volunteers, who are overseen by Supervisors (paid staff who have higher degrees in psychology or a related field). We partner with national organizations like NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), NEDA (National Eating Disorder Association), corporations like Facebook and YouTube, and local organizations like Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Department of Public Health. |
To become a volunteer, you submit a 30 minute application, a background check and 24 hour online training. Volunteers dedicate 4 hours per week to counseling but each volunteer sets his or her own hours. Current volunteers say they love the flexible hours, working remotely, and find they gain empathy and strong skills useful for work and relationships. Training is free.

NAMI SF's Ending the Silence is a youth mental health 50-minute program designed for high school audiences and is typically presented in the freshman/sophomore health classes during the mental health portion of the curriculum. Through this presentation, students learn symptoms and indicators of mental illness, and are given ideas about how to help themselves, friends, or family members who may be in need of support. No experience is required and training is provided! Please contact [email protected] if interested.
